In the later than anticipated press conference today at Portman Road, manager Mick McCarthy informed us that Mr.Dependable, Cole Skuse, was fit again and would be involved against Sunderland at the weekend.
He of course missed the defeat to Wolves, due a recurring ankle problem, which left him with his foot in a protective boot but that came off at the start of the week and he resumed training.
Less encouraging news perhaps is that David McGoldrick is carrying an injury and has not trained and he has to be a big doubt.
Second choice keeper Dean Gerken remains sidelined with that recurring hip problem and this means that young Michael Crowe will deputise from the bench.
Tom Adeyemi, who was substituted in the under 23 game against Millwall through injury, is apparently on the mend and according to the manager was not as badly hurt as first thought. ‘Thankfully it wasn`t as bad as we feared and it looked far worse than it actually is but it`s still an injury.” McCarthy explained.
Although our hopes of a play-off place are now decidedly remote, McCarthy believes that his players still have the motivation to keep trying and in the case of both Stephen Gleeson and new signing Muzzy Carayol, a chance to win longer term deals. The 29-year-old winger has signed a contract through to the end of the season but will be busting a gut in an effort to impress!
Caroyl also sounded upbeat about playing some part in proceeding in the north east and feels that he is match fit and ready to go.
“Yes, definitely. I`m ready to go and – touch wood, I`ve not struggled with any injuries. I`ve been available for most of this season so if the gaffer wants me to start at Sunderland I`ll be ready,’ he said.
Barry Cotter also joined yesterday from League of Ireland side Limerick but the 19 year old knows he will have to bide his time before making inroads into the first team picture.
He too, was convinced that he could make a difference in the long term and said confidently:
‘ It`s a big step up for me but I`m confident it`s one I can make. I`ve not set myself too many goals yet. I`d like to break into the first-team obviously but for now I just want to get my head down and work hard and show people what I can do.’
Let us hope he can.
