George Burleys Portman Road Misery continued at Portman Road on Saturday, the former Town boss’s Southampton side saw young Irish striker Billy Clarke score a 78th minute winner, despite Saints taking a second minute lead.

Town fielded the same eleven that won at QPR, apart from Jon Macken making his debut in place of eventual match winner Billy Clarke, who had to settle for a place on the bench.

Trinidad striker Kenwyne Jones avaided the marking of Richard Naylor to slot past Price, after Rasiak had beaten both De Vos and Alex Bruce to nod Nathan Dyer’s cross down for Jones.

Southampton should really have been further ahead at the interval, Viafara hit the bar, Rasiak the post, Jones went close twice, and Idiakez’s corner had to be clawed away by the impressive Price, to avoid town being out of sight before half time.

It was the same story after half time, Price had to save twice more form Jones, before the under par Matt Richards was replaced by debutant Sylvain Legwinski.

The change payed instant dividends as Town equalised.

Alan Lee was felled by Pele, and Mark Halsey pointed to the spot.

Simon Walton again stepped up, and slotted the ball past Kelvin Davis, for his second penalty in two games.

Southampton had yet more chances as Rasiak fired over when he should have done much better.

On 65 minutes Jon Macken was replaced by Billy Clarke, and ten minutes later he scored what turned out to be the winner.

Mark Noble swung a free kick over from the left, and Billy Clarke nodded in atthe back post, after Kelvin Davis had misjudged the flight of the ball.

Saints threw everything forward in the final minutes, with Wright Phillips hitting the post and having one saved by Price, Rasiak again went close, and Andrew Surman produced a superb save from Price

Ipswich had to throw in block after block, but eventually did enough to complete a victory that moves Town up the Table
