Ipswich Town could soon be closing in on Sunderland keeper Marton Fulop after the Black Cats confirmed that Roy Keane has made an enquiry about the Hungarian international.

The Sunderland manager revealed to a North East newspaper that though there has not yet been a formal bid, Town are one of several clubs with whom there have been discussions concerning the 27-year-old glovesman.

Bruce admitted that he is almost certain Fulop will move on, though he told The Journal: “I don’t know whether it will be Ipswich, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Town have been linked with Fulop already this summer and with the keeper widely expected to quit Sunderland with Craig Gordon occupying the No. 1 shirt and recent reports of a possible move for David James, the latest comments suggest that it is very likely Fulop will be looking for regular first-team action elsewhere.

Interestingly from an Ipswich perspective, the news comes at the same time that Town manager Roy Keane revealed that he is not too far away from bringing in further additions to his squad, having already brought in Conor Hourihane from his former club last week.

Keane told the Ipswich Official Website that “We are making progress now though and we’ve had one offer accepted for a player this morning”; whether the player in question is Fulop remains to be seen, though Bruce’s comments suggest that such progress towards a deal for the keeper is unlikely. However, Keane also revealed to the Official Website that he is closing in on a possible loan deal for another player as well as holding talks with a third.

Even though the news of more signings on the horizon is a boost for Town fans, and even though Fulop would be a quality addition, there are likely to be questions over the need for another goalkeeper. Despite Richard Wright’s release at the end of the season, Brian Murphy has become established as a solid No. 1 for Town since the start of 2010 and with Arran Lee-Barrett also available, it is difficult to see why further reinforcements are needed in goal rather than key areas elsewhere on the field. However, as demonstrated with the use of Murphy, Lee-Barrett, Wright and loanee Asmir Begovic last season, perhaps you can never have too many goalkeepers?

Would Fulop be a good signing for Ipswich? Do you think we need more cover in goal, or should Keane be focusing his energies on other positions? Post your views using the comment box below or discuss the topic with other Town fans on our club forums.
