Bright Head On Broad Shoulders

Nathan Broadhead joined Everton from Wrexham at the age of 10 but now, at 24, he had decided to transfer his loyalties to Ipswich Town.  Way back in December 2017, Broadhead was named in the Everton squad for a Europa League game against Cypriot sports club Apollon Limassol, but that was about the nearest he got to first-team action.  In August 2019, Broadhead signed a one-year contract extension until 2021 with the Toffees, before joining Burton Albion on loan for the 2019–20 season.

Before his permanent switch to Ipswich, he went out on loan again at Sunderland, and then again at Wigan Athletic, but they were struggling at the wrong end of the Championship table, and he struggled to make any impact with them. That loan deal ended prematurely when on the 6th of January 2023, Everton recalled him on the news that Ipswich were showing serious interest in the player. He needed very broad shoulders to take the plunge and drop down the divisions on a permanent basis, but the gamble seems to be working well for both he and Ipswich Town football club.

Later that month, as we know, he signed a three-and-a-half year deal for a reported fee of £1.5m – although we have learned since that the fee was around 1,4 million. It is, however, a lot of money to pay for a club playing in the third tier of English football, and it emphasised the club’s renewed ambition under our new American owners. This ended for the player a 15 year association with the Merseysiders. They may regret him leaving now, given their lowly position in the Premier League, and their lack of goals.

Nathan Broadhead has already been rewarded for his involvement with the Blues picking up the Goal of the Month and the  Player of the Month awards in February. I am a great fan of the player, and I feel sure he will get better and better the more games he plays. Barring injury, he is a nailed-on starter tomorrow against a rejuvenated Burton Albion at Portman Road. In eight appearances, he has already scored twice, and in three of those games he came off the bench. I fancy him to score tomorrow too!
