Bad Omen For Damien’s Future?

Ipswich Town defender Damien Delaney has revealed that he is yet to hear from the club regarding a new contract at Portman Road.

Delaney is one of a considerable number of squad members at Town whose contracts are set to expire this summer, yet despite plenty of reports that new manager Paul Jewell is holding talks with his players, Delaney says that he has not yet been approached.

‘I’d love to stay,’ Delaney told BBC Radio Suffolk. ‘But for whatever reason nothing’s been explained to me or mentioned about a contract. I suppose their silence speaks loud enough.’

‘But I think Gareth [McAuley] and Chuck [David Norris] are in the same boat, they’ve not heard anything for two months with regards to contracts,’ he added.

It would be something of a surprise if Jewell were not interested in keeping hold of the Irishman, who has cemented himself within the Ipswich first team since being signed from QPR by Roy Keane in 2009. Delaney’s comments will also raise further concern about the future of Gareth McAuley and David Norris who, like Delaney, have still not secured new contracts at the club despite Jewell insisting that they are not for sale.

Meanwhile another of the out-of-contract players, Alan Quinn, is facing a new setback in his recovery from the groin injury that has kept him on the sidelines since Town’s pre-season friendly against Leiston. Jewell confirmed that the midfielder, whose current contract expires in June, will remain out of action for a further three or four weeks having required a second operation.
