Are We Back To Fortress Portman Road?

Under 14,000 people watched Ipswich beat Reading 2-0 at Portman Road but those who did, saw a lot to excite them at the start of the busy period of Christmas fixtures.

This was a solid performance, in which Ipswich got an early goal through a beautiful passing move by Celina and the impressive Connolly and then doubled their lead with a goal from the irrepressible and always entertaining Joe Garner.

Ipswich played as a team defending with spirit and attacking with purpose. This is a much better team than last year and has a real chance of reaching the play-offs.

Waghorn worked tirelessly and was many peoples man of the match – he is a real threat and the complete striker. But my man of the match was Jordan Spence, who not only defended magnificently but also made surging forward runs – one that so nearly ended in a wonderful goal.

Luke Chambers led the team with passion as always, and Cole Skuse again played really well before going off after making a brave tackle and was replaced at the break by kevin Bru.

Built on a shoestring, we have a team that is seriously in with a chance of promotion and this is a remarkable achievement that deserves our respect, appreciation and support.

We are beating teams with resources far and away above ours and we should not then criticise the management for using the tactics they employ in beating those wealthy teams.

We only had 27% of the possession but won 2-0. As Mick said it`s ‘What you do with the possession that counts’. In this respect and in many ways, we should acknowledge that he does know what he is doing and does have the formula right!

Merry Christmas to you all at this most exciting of times!
Oh, and may I add, well done to Mick McCarthy and the lads!
