Is Pigott In For A Surprise Recall?

AFC Wimbledon v Charlton Athletic EFL Trophy, Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, 01 September 2020

Joe Pigott left AFC Wimbledon after three years to join the Blues under Paul Cook. He now finds himself on the fringes of the first team, but could he be recalled tonight, as Town face his former club in the southwest of the City of London? Pigott played 137 times for our hosts and scored 47 times, which is an impressive goalscoring ratio.

He was prolific with Maidstone United too, netting 17 times in 45 appearances, and this included a loan spell with the club. At Ipswich, he has not been involved anywhere near as much as he would have wished. In fact, to date, he has made just 14 appearances in a Blues shirt scoring twice. This was not what we had expected when he joined us this summer but of course, nobody expected Macauley Bonne to be so good! Competition for places in the striking department has meant he has had to bide his time so far, but with Bonne struggling to find the net as frequently as earlier in the season, could this be the time that Ipswich boss Kieron McKenna decided to give him a start?

In all likelihood, it won’t happen. He has not played enough football of late to be thrown into the fray and instead, might find himself on the bench again. He needs game time though and then I think we will probably see the best of him. He has been on bench-warming duties for the last 6 matches but has only been used twice. I feel sure that if things are not going to plan this evening then he will be utilized again. We all know how former players have bitten us in the bum before, and I am sure Pigott will be dying to play some part in proceedings this evening.
