Defender Tommy Smith could be playing in the World Cup in South Africa next summer.

The youngster, although born in England is eligible to play for New Zealand, who have qualified for the World Cup. It’s fair to say that Smith won’t be turning out for Fabio Capello’s side in Group C next summer, leaving the door open for him to play for Ricki Herbert’s New Zealand.

Smith has played for England at youth level, but Fifa rules allow players to switch allegiances before they play in a full international.

Herbert says he is hoping that the Ipswich defender chooses to go to South Africa and take this chance he might not get again. He said: ‘Tommy is definitely one I am keen to get involved. The lure of the World Cup is the biggest selling point and there might not be many people who would say no to that.

‘Tommy might not get that chance in his life again.”
