Outcome of Vital Ipswich poll concerning the future of Town’s teenage star
He’s been linked with here, there and everywhere; Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham is a man in demand, and for the past week Vital Ipswich have been asking you whether it was time for the Blues to give in to market forces this January.
17-year-old Wickham has been in the shop window ever since he burst onto the scene in his first season aged 16, scoring 6 goals in all competitions. Up until this weekend however, the youngster had not scored this season, but prospective Premier League suitors were still clamouring for his services. They’ve supposedly been ready to offer big bucks too, with fees of up to £10 million mooted in the media. Not least because, as an England U21 international, it has been widely suggested that the lofty frontman could become ‘the next Wayne Rooney’ – or perhaps more fittingly for his size, ‘the next Peter Crouch’…!
As such, Vital Ipswich decided to ask Town fans whether you thought Ipswich should sell Wickham in this January transfer window. This is how you voted:
8% – Yes, because we need funds for new signings
24% – Yes, because he isn’t good enough
60% – No
8% – Don’t know / Don’t care

Aside from the 8% who weren’t sure or weren’t fussed either way, only around a third of our voters were willing to see the youngster leave. Surprisingly only a quarter of that portion were motivated to sell by the prospect of a big transfer kitty, while by comparison, a quarter of all voters felt that the striker should go because he isn’t actually worth the hype. Perhaps it is just as well then that Wickham signed a contract extension at Ipswich until 2013 on Friday, as by far the overwhelming majority of Town fans (60%) wanted to see him stay at Portman Road. And having finally scored his first goal of the season against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, our Wickham ain’t wandering anywhere just yet, folks!
