Why Mick The Man Must Do The Business

In some ways, I do feel a smidgen sorry for Mick McCarthy but only a smidgen. We perhaps will never know whether it is him or owner Marcus Evans who is pulling the purse strings so tightly but I think it is probably both of them.

Evans was exceedingly generous in the Roy Keane and Paul Jewell reign but put a stop to all that once he realized that success cannot be bought at any price.

The dubious nature of his business off-shoots have been called into question but let us not forget that our owner still has oodles of cash to splash if he thinks it can advance his his business empire so we should not be dismissive about his current financial potency.

The thing about Mick intrigues me even more. He, by nature, has bragging rights on being a tight-fisted Yorkshireman and alluded to the fact by saying prior to the recruitment – via hefty transfer fees of Adam Webster and more recently Grant Ward that, ‘ If we could have got them on freebies or loans then I would have done but there was nothing happening on that front unfortunately.’

So who really is to blame for our relatively spendthrift nature? I think essentially both of them. Marcus knows you need to speculate to accumulate but you need a shrewd mind to make this work and in Mick the Man the perfect marriage of convenience was born.

Limited resources and success are orgasmic to Mick. He loves nothing more than playing the underdog card. Marcus is relatively content with this because with Mick the Man at the helm he has less to lose and if anyone can transcend the laws of football logic then it is Mick McCarthy who can and more importantly perhaps, thrives on it!

So then, what will the crystal balls hold for Ipswich Town football club? Only a genie probably knows but I would hazard a guess of much the same as before.

The best we can realistically hope for is a play-off place and sadly even that is a major challenge given our miserly spending and very limited additions to an already weakened squad.
