Why Macauley Bonne Must Stay On

There is little doubt that since he returned to his natural home, Macauley Bonne has been truly sensational! He is the division’s joint-top scorer, along with Cole Stockton of Morecambe, and is already into double figures for the season after just 12 matches, because of course, he did not play against AFC Wimbledon at the back end of August.

What a genius of a player he is. Last night he was up to his old tricks with goalkeepers. It saved us a point against Sheffield Wednesday when he robbed the keeper, and he did something similar last night but finished off his ingenuity himself! I love the socks off this forward, and he is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favourite Town players! I know that sounds ridiculous when you consider what has gone before, the division we are in, and more than 50 years of supporting the Blues, but I am not exaggerating when I say he is a special one!

In many ways, Bonne is very much an old fashioned centre forward. He is good in the air and on the floor. He sniffs out chances that most forwards would not spot, and more importantly, perhaps, he knows where the net is! This is a man on a mission. He wants to rub dirt in the noses of the people who left him in tears when he was just 14, and so he should!

Football can be a very cruel sport but I hope those who were responsible are taking notes. I have a horrible feeling that Bryan Klug was still involved with our youth in those days, but it might not have been him who showed Bonne the exit door. It was 11 years ago, and I am quite sure that every time he sticks the ball in the net, it serves as a suitable reminder.

In fairness, it is very difficult at that young age to predict who will make the grade and who will not. Over the years though we seem to have made a bad habit of letting raw talent slip through the net. Bonne is one of many who have had to ply their trade elsewhere before the penny finally dropped!

I think Macauley Boone would wish to continue this adventure with us, but how much of a say will he have? Every goal he scores for Town is a double-edged sword. QPR boss Mark Warburton will be taking notes. He has a lot of good strikers at his disposal, but if injuries or suspensions kick in, then he would surely want Bonne back in January. And every goal Bonne scores adds to his transfer value.

I feel sure our new owners will see the real worth of this player and do everything they can to keep him at the club. I would certainly hope so.

What a pity we could not have bought him. That would have solved all our problems. He still has two years to run on a three-year contract, so the London club won’t let him go on the cheap.

To state the blindingly obvious, goals win games. In the McCarthy era, we had a good defence but (most of the time at least) a powder puff attack. Macauley Bonne has been an absolute revelation for us this season. It’s not just the number of goals he has already scored, or even the consistency of his scoring. Look at the individual goals themselves. He is great at sniffing out opportunities!
This has made Town a dangerous proposition as Plymouth will find out next week. Our defence remains work in progress though, so we remain capable of coming a cropper when you least expect it. Infuriating but true.
Getting back to Macauley B, I agree, sign him up ASAP!

Spot on Richard. All four goals yesterday were excellently executed, and the return of Toto Nsiala and Christian Walton seemed to give us more solidity at the back. Macauley Bonne might be a very difficult catch, but the fact that I think he wants to stay here might just help our cause.
