Why Lincoln Is So Very Important

The long wait for our first win needs to come on Saturday, and for the sake of manager Paul Cook and his crew, a defeat is quite frankly unthinkable. But there is much more to it than that.

Town lies in 22nd place in the League One table after six games played, and our goal difference is minus five. A lack of a victory so far means that confidence will be starting to ebb away, and the belief the players have in their head coach will also be on the decline.

As I have said several times before, gaining some momentum is a key aspect of any sport, and this is especially so in football because it is essentially a team game. I am not convinced that anything less than a win will do, but if we get it, then I fully expect us to turn the corner.

It will not be easy and made all the more difficult by our recent form, but we have to find a way to win away and get the motor running. In every game so far we have stalled the engine, so we desperately need a well-oiled machine come Saturday afternoon at the LNER Arena. (formerly Sincil Bank.)

On Tuesday night, the Imps drew 1-1 with Rotherham United after trailing before the break. They have won twice in seven matches, so unlike us, they are used to picking up victories and the euphoria that three points bring!

Their manager Michael Appleton has backed the Blues to overcome their disappointing start, but for obvious reasons, does not want it to happen immediately. “Signing 19 players – that’s a hell of a lot of players to bring in at the same time. At some point they are going to click, a lot of people have said that. I hope it’s not Saturday. I hope we can perform to a level where one, we can compete with them and two, beat them!,” he explained to Lincolnshire Live.

On a more positive note, one of Town’s best players so far this season remains very upbeat about our prospects of not only clawing our way back into the reckoning. Winger Wes Burns thinks that Paul Cook has assembled one of the best squads ever! He could be right, but the proof is in the pudding, and this is another reason why we need a win under our belts without further delay.

Speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk Burns said this, “It was gut-wrenching to be turned over the way we were last weekend. As a team we never expected the result to go that way. It’s been a real tough start for us. People were coming into the squad at various times throughout pre-season. It does take time for players to settle down and build those relationships.”

His very positive view on where the Blues are at continued, “I’ll say this myself now, the supporters do need to stick with us. Times will change. That gelling process is still happening. The calibre of player we’ve got here… it’s probably one of the best squads that I’ve ever been part of. I think it’s probably one of the best squads that League One has ever seen. So it is just a case of sticking with us. Hopefully, the supporters don’t turn on us too quickly.”

Well, Wes Burns, supporters will stick with you but this comes with a caveat or two. 1. You give it your all as a team, and commit for the full 90 minutes and finally start to win matches. 2. Take this league by the scruff of the neck, and prove that action does speak much louder than mere words alone.
