What Ever Happened To Christian Walton?

I boldly stated on Monday that Christian Walton had all but signed for Ipswich Town on a three-year deal, but that because he was not in the neighbourhood, we would have to wait for him to put pen to paper – although the player and the clubs involved, had agreed verbally to a deal.

I had expected Ipswich would have officially announced the signing yesterday, but it remains all quiet on the Weston front, so the question is why? My insider at the club texted me to say, that although it was a protracted process, the deal was still expected to go through but it might take a little longer than expected. It already has!

Reading between the lines it appears that Luton Town are still trying to persuade him that joining a Championship club gives him a much brighter future than joining a club in the third tier of English football and who might not even make the playoffs. They have apparently matched Town’s salary arrangement – after initially being unwilling to match the 12,500 quid the Blues had offered.

He was recalled by Brighton earlier in the week as the transfer possibility began to gain traction, but there is a real fear, that as Walton has still not as yet officially signed, his head might have been turned by The Hatters overtures. In 2016/17 he played 27 times for the Hatters in one of his many loan spells, but he really should think again. Luton finds themselves in 15th place in the Championship so any ambitions of him playing Premier League football with them any time soon is a long way off. Christian must honour his verbal agreement – regardless of the temptations to look the other way.

His salary is still the major issue here. Town cannot possibly match the sum he earned at Premier League club Brighton, and Walton knows he will have to take a sizable pay-cut – whichever club he eventually joins. His agents Crown Football United are determined to squeeze every last drop of revenue out of potential buyers as the scourge of the modern game raises its ugly heads again.

I am still confident this deal will go through but a lot later than I first anticipated.

Well, now we know. He signed officially this evening, and thank God for that! I believe the original three-year deal was reduced to 2 & a half years, partly due to the hefty wages he will accrue. No complaints though. Welcome on board Christian Walton!
