Well, it depends on what side of the fence you sit on. The eternal optimist will say that this was a point gained but the pessimist will see it as two points lost. It is contentious.
If you take on board the small pitch and the loss of Nathan Broadhead; along that very strong wind, it makes good sense to argue that it was a point gained because we were never allowed to completely dominate the game, although we had more shots and more possession. Let us not forget too, Cheltenham had some good chances as well!
Having been on such a fantastic run, I think most of us would have happily taken a draw had it not been for the way it happened. We had a 1-0 lead thanks to Conor Chaplin’s 22nd goal of the season, and with 20 minutes to go Town’s travelling supporters were singing about the Blues being top of the league! And we were!
Fleetingly of course, because football is about the whole game and not just a convenient segment of it, and when AlfieMay diverted the ball into an empty net after Christian Walton fumbled with a hopeful ball forward from Ryan Broom, Town dropped from 1st to third in seconds! Now that was painful! And then it felt more like a defeat than an away point gained, as the reality of our new-found status began to sink in.
More optimistic Ipswich Town fans will argue that having won 8 games in a row and having not conceded a goal in 9 matches, it was almost inevitable that this would happen and we should lick our wounds and move on. I am quite sure this is the positivity that manager Kieran Mckenna will impart, and he is right to feel upbeat. Our next two home games are at Portman Road when we entertain Charlton Athletic and Port Vale, and we can be assured of more huge crowds for those enticing encounters.
And finally, don’t forget to take a look at my new YouTube channel called Being Frank On Ipswich Town, where I discuss all things related to the club we love. The question I have posed today is who scored those three goals against Barcelona in 1977 that gave us a 3-0 victory at Portman Road in front of over 33,000 supporters? It was a game that featured Dutch superstar Johan Cryuff but he was on the losing end of a great team display. If you have a clue drop a comment below – or conversely via the channel itself.
