Town Under Scrutiny On The BBC

If we were to field a full strength team and perform out of our skins then we might all be very grateful for this live televised event but this seems to be a rather unlikely scenario.

Sadly, the general feeling is that it will be another horror show in front of a panel of football experts who will lament upon the rapid decline of Ipswich Town football club.

It is understandable that the Beeb have chosen this one because it is the match where there is a real possibility that the underdog will defeat the top dog; although these days, the Town seem to be about as intimidating as a pet poodle.

I guess Gary Lineker will be hosting proceedings and if Alan Shearer is in the studio then we can expert some harsh words about just what is going so horribly wrong with Ipswich Town.

I suspect that either George Burley or perhaps David Johnson might get a look in too and they are likely to be a little more diplomatic than say Terry Butcher, who is already a big critic of the Blues this season.

Being under the microscope of the whole nation is a daunting prospect and if your head rules your heart, you might be advised to have a little flutter on home side, in front of a packed house at Sincil Bank next Tuesday evening.

I watched them in the previous round at home to Oldham and they shot into a three goal lead with some wonderful interplay and some sharp shooting. I remember thinking at the time that I had not seen Ipswich perform this season with as much flair and invention and I feared the worst when they came to Portman Road.

Both clubs will receive 72,000 pounds for this live television encounter and the winner will get another £67,500 from the F.A.’s prize fund – which of course is a massive incentive for the minnows to progress.

If we go through, I doubt very much we will see any of this money invested in the transfer window and even if we did, the chances are we would be still outbid; such is the sorry state of affairs at Portman Road these days.

The winners face Brighton at home in the next round and the Championship leaders will be watching this one with mild interest rather than trepidation, whoever eventually gets through.
