Tabloid reports claim that Ipswich Town are to resume their pursuit of Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra.

Chopra could well decide to leave Cardiff this summer after the Bluebirds missed out on promotion through the playoffs for the second successive season. The 27-year-old has struggled with injuries this year, restricting him to just 9 goals in 32 Championship appearances. However, the former Sunderland striker has been prolific for the Welsh side in previous seasons with a total of 58 league goals in 147 matches.

The reports resume something of a long-term saga with Chopra, who has been linked with Town on a number of occasions, most notably last summer. Previous boss Roy Keane was known to have been an admirer of the former England U21 international having signed him for Sunderland in 2007, but any attempt to sign him again for Ipswich appeared to be scuppered by a high asking price, reportedly around £4 million.

However, having failed in a bid for Doncaster Rovers’ Billy Sharp, current Blues manager Paul Jewell is now said to be ready to offer Cardiff £1 million for Chopra, who could well be available at a reduced price with his current contract set to expire in summer 2012. The news coincides with reports that Jewell is set to meet with a prospective signing on Friday, but whether this could actually be Chopra remains a mystery.

One Reply to “Town To Resume Chopra Chase?”

  • This seems slightly more feasible than it was this time last year – Chopra hasn’t had such a good season as before, Cardiff look to be weakening having lost Bothroyd/Burke and possibly losing Dave Jones, and Chopra should be cheaper if he only has one year left on his contract. Knowing what we’re like though, I still can’t see it happening!!
