West Bromwich Albion striker Ishmael Miller is the latest player to be targeted by Ipswich Town for a possible loan deal, manager Roy Keane has confirmed.

Rumours began to circulate earlier in the week that the Town boss was in the market for a striker after he revealed that he was hoping to bring in another loanee in the next few weeks, with a frontman the most likely priority given the Blues’ recent struggles to find enough goals. Miller looks to be one of the names in Keane’s sights, but the manager conceded that he will face very stiff competition for the 23-year-old frontman.

‘He will have plenty of options’, Keane told reporters in East Anglia, ‘but he is a good player and I am always interested in good players if they are available.’

Miller has barely figured at all for West Brom since their promotion to the Premier League, recording just one substitute appearance in the league this season. Having scored 16 goals in all competitions for the Baggies in the 2007/08 season, his tally since has been rather disappointing with appearances limited by a long spell out with injury. It is difficult to say therefore whether he could really be the influential goalscorer that Ipswich need. Despite that, Miller has reportedly been attracting interest from Sven Goran-Eriksson at Leicester City as well as Tony Mowbray at Middlesbrough, so it seems his talents are rather sought after at this level.

Attacking reinforcements should be a priority at Portman Road with cover up front somewhat limited – Keane confirmed that Connor Wickham suffered an ankle injury in training on Sunday which caused him to miss Tuesday’s Carling Cup win over Northampton and the England U19 international is likely to be out for a couple of weeks. With Ronan Murray still only just finding his way in the first team, the Blues’ only experienced options are Jason Scotland and Tamas Priskin. A lack of depth – and arguably quality – up front has been a problem for some time at Ipswich, so perhaps we need all the help we can get.

Do you think Town should be looking to sign Ishmael Miller, or are there other targets that Keane should be considering? Have your say by registering to post comments or join our forums:
