Striker Dean Bowditch scored four times for the Ipswich second string as they thrashed their A12 rivals Colchester 9-2 at Playford Road.

The reserves were forced into bringing academy coach Gerard Nash into the side, with some of the second string regulars playing for the youth team in their FA Cup fifth round match against Watford the night before.

New signing Luciano Civelli started the game for the Blues, but appeared to be very unfit. The Argentine has not played a competitive game in nearly two months, with previous club Banfield having finished their league season.

Moritz Volz also started the game on his comeback from injury, with Liam Trotter and Matt Richards also completing the 90 minutes.

The wet and blustery conditions were a shock to the system for Civelli, who had a quiet start to the game. Richards gave away a penalty on 15, with Col U’s Fabian Batchelor giving the visitors the lead.

Bowditch got his first from the spot n 24 and then got his second just a matter of a minutes later. Ben Thatcher scored a third on 30 minutes, with Bowditch getting another two before the break.

There was still time for Haynes to make it 6-1 before half-time, converting from the spot. He then got his second just six minutes after the break.

Civelli was replaced on the hour, with his replacement Nathan Ralph scoring twice. On the hour, Colchester pulled one back.
