Town Have Almost Nailed It

Ipswich Town looks to have pulled off another great signing, and at the expense of their big-spending League One rivals Sunderland. And what a good signing this promises to be!

News is filtering through this evening, and from a number of reliable sources, that the Blues have all but sealed a deal for 23-year-old left-back Hayden Coulson.

He has been on Town’s radar for some time and if his signature is confirmed, it will be the second time in just over a week that the Tractor Boys have outgunned the Black Cats in pursuit of a key player. Last week it was much sought after Joe Pigott!

Apart from the Stadium of Light outfit, Luton has also been eyeing the 23-year-old, according to the Sunderland Echo, and the Hatters were also closely monitoring the Pigott developments as well. Who knows, maybe Ed Sheeran got on the blower and said, ” Come on mate, you buy my all records and comment about them on social media, so why not get more closely involved!”

All I do know is that if Town get their man, it will be another very serious statement of intent. Throughout the close season, Ipswich have done the business with some astute signings, and it looks as if CEO Mark Ashton was right when he said there was more to follow.

It is common knowledge that Middlesborough manager Neil Warnock has felt for some time that Coulson was surplus to requirements, and reports suggest that we have won the race to sign the Middlesbrough ace by pinning him down to a three-year deal, ahead of other clubs eyeing a deal.

I think the thought of playing away might well have appealed to the player. Leaving Middlesborough for rivals Sunderland, might not have gone down too well in the North East of England.

    Rubbish signing

    • Redcar Red says:

If it comes off it will be a very good capture for Ipswich. The lad is far too good for League One and will prove to be a great signing. Importantly he would also be capable of carrying it on in the Championship.

He is at the right age to develop Redcar Red, and I think he could turn out to be a very valuable addition to the squad. Let’s hope the deal is completed tomorrow.

      Explain why exactly Joe?

  • Richard Gardiner says:

Couldn’t agree more Redcar Red, Hayden Coulson would be a great addition to our team. Both for our promotion push next season and in the Championship!

    • Frank Weston says:

That is a very positive spin on things Richard, and I trust that your optimism is fully vindicated.

  • Craig Dales says:

Has a Boro fan, I can honestly say, you have a good player if he signs. He’s quick, with a good engine on him. He can play as a left back or left midfield. He would be an excellent signing for Ipswich. A bit disappointed that we are letting him go.

  • Frank Weston says:

Thank you Craig for your honest assessment. It is always a pity when a player you like moves on. We know because we have suffered this fate many times – the most recent is probably Jack Lankester. He was a local lad who came through the ranks, and everybody at the club seemed to like him.

  • Paul says:

I’m not sure Sunderland were ever interested in Piggott and this is pure speculation about Boro fullback. Apart from the silly transfer of Will Grigg Sunderland have not really spent any money in the last 3 years so hardly big spending.

    • Frank Weston says:

Your views intrigue me, Paul. I know there is a lot of gossip and speculation in the game but to suggest that you were probably not interested in Piggott comes as quite a surprise!

  • Colin says:

“Big Spenders Sunderland” we have not spent a penny this summer or last. Yes we have already sold over 25k season tickets but that has not turned into cash anyway. No ill feeling both Piggott and this lad would be good additions for you and I would have taken them both however I think our manager has his eyes on other players at present.

    • Frank Weston says:

Thanks, Colin for your honest appraisal. You are right. The term “Big Spenders Sunderland” does not apply to the current financial climate at the club. You have a huge reputation in the game and, just like Ipswich, you are struggling to claw your way out of League One. There are no easy fixes here, but we both need to assemble squads that are right for this division.
