Town Go Down To Narrow Wolves Defeat

I am not overly despondent about the result on Saturday away to Wolves because a narrow defeat is probably the best result we could have hoped for.

Yes, it does mean that manager Mick McCarthy’s remarkable undefeated run against his former club is over but within the context of this encounter it was to be expected.

The fact that keeper our Polish keeper hardly had a serious save to make, speaks volumes for our makeshift defence, who were missing Jonas Knudsen through a late withdrawal and a midfield that had to make do without talisman Cole Skuse.

All things considered then, this was not a bad team performance against the runaway league leaders, who will surely claim one of the two automatic promotion places that are up for grabs.

Town had their chances too and ironically perhaps had more corners than the home side but were not really all that threatening up front either in a game that produced few clear cut chances for either side.

Manager Mick McCarthy will again be disappointed with the way we lost the game but the goal when it came, had more than an element of luck about it.

McCarthy claimed that stand-in wingback Myles Kenlock was too easily overpowered in conceding possession but some ref’s may have blown for a foul before the build up to the goal, which also had one or two other fortuitous elements to it too. The timing however was poor. Why do we concede so many just before the break?

In fairness though, this was a game that few of us expected anything from. Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of the big spenders in this division and they even had a player on the bench that cost five times more than the entire Ipswich team!

Next up is QPR at home tomorrow and there is every reason to believe we can continue our fine form at Portman Road.

We are still just three points off those illusive play-off places and our narrow defeat to Wolves, should not have dented the players confidence. On the contrary, it may in fact have bolstered it and if Cole Skuse and Jonas Knudsen return we will be stronger still.

So on that cheerful note, may I take the opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas. A win tomorrow and those festive celebrations may last a lot longer than any of us had anticipated!
