Town Go Down To A Rampant Bristol City

Manager Mick McCarthy intended to play the same eleven that stuffed Sunderland in midweek but in the warm up, Tom Adeyemi suffered an injury and 17 year old Tristan Nydam came into the side, ahead of Grant Ward, who may have been considered to be the obvious choice.

Town went a goal down after just two minutes, when Josh Browhill struck from the edge of the box and a wicked deflection meant it evaded Bartosz Bialkowski by some distance.

This was a horror start for the Blues and Bristol City totally dominated the opening proceedings, playing fast flowing football that made Town look pedestrian at times.

As the game progressed, Ipswich were struggling to get a foothold in the game but then Joe Garner was sent clear but deliberated too long and the chance was gone.

Then Bristol City should have made it 2-0 when they hit the bar but on 31 minutes, they extended their lead when Diedhiou headed powerfully home from close range.

But Town were battling to get back into this game and it was a wonderfully worked goal by the Blues that got them there.

After McGoldrick fed the ball, to Jonus Knudsen with some deft touches on the left, the Danish international sent in a low ball which the on-rushing Waghorn slammed into the net off the underside of the bar.

It was a goal that changed the mindset of the game, as Ipswich finally started to believe again and as the interval approached Town they were in the ascendancy for perhaps the first time in the game.

The second half saw the Blues playing with a lot more fluency but as the game wore on, manager Mick McCarthy decided to reshuffle his pack and took off Iorfa ten minutes into the second half and then shortly after, Celina and McGoldrick. On came Adam Webster, Grant Ward and Freddie Sears in the hope that it meant bring some new impetus but very little transpired.

On 82 minutes Reid increased Bristol City’s lead with another unseemly deflection, off Jonas Knudsen which gave keeper Bialkowski no chance to repair the damage.

Town eventually went down but not without a fight and if had it not been for a premature injury to Adeyemi and those two horrendous deflections, who knows what the final score might have been?

No one can criticise McCarthy for his positive team selection and on another day it might have been very different.
