Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has confirmed that he has made a bid for another striker, but the target in question is not Blackburn Rovers’ Jason Roberts.

Rumours surfaced on Tuesday that Town could potentially be closing in on Roberts, who was previously linked in early May, but suggestions that the 33-year-old had been at Portman Road for talks were denied by Roberts himself. The player revealed on his Twitter account that he is currently in Grenada and has not had any contact with the Blues.

Even though a reunion with his former colleague at Wigan Athletic is not on the cards, boss Jewell has revealed that an offer has been tabled for another forward.

Jewell told reporters in East Anglia: ‘We have made a bid for another striker and there are two or three other things going on at the moment which, luckily, we’ve been able to keep quiet to a certain extent.’

The identity of the frontman in question remains unknown; aside from Roberts, a number of strikers have been mentioned in the past few days, with Town reported to have approached Reading over Noel Hunt and Sheffield United’s Ched Evans also heavily linked. One player who is no longer on Jewell’s radar however is Billy Sharp, for whom the manager has ended his pursuit after the Blues had a £2.3 million offer for the Doncaster striker rejected a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile Ipswich are understood to be making efforts to fill several other positions with possibly five or more new additions before the summer is out. Jewell has confirmed that the club have made a new enquiry for Preston North End defender Sean St Ledger, for whom Town had a bid turned down in January, whilst his team-mate and compatriot Keith Treacy was also rumoured to be interesting the Blues.
