Poor Old Town Are Going Down

It is now official. Ipswich Town are going down. Ten points adrift of survival and eleven with our inferior goal difference, and we are now beyond hope.

This is the saddest day in my fifty years of supporting this club, and after Town started so well our defensive vulnerabilities cost us dearly in the end. It was a real delight to see young Jack Lankester score his first goal in an Ipswich shirt, but we failed to capitalize on our wonderful first-half performance with more goals, and the price we paid for this was another devastating home defeat.

Freddie Sears was culpable when he should have doubled our lead when a delightful move deserved an end product. Sears was disappointing throughout but Jack Lankester was a revelation by comparison. He and Ellis Harrison were impressive up front, and our midfield ticked all the right boxes but our failure to kill a game has been our Achilles heel for many years, and it cost us dearly this afternoon.

Up until the interval, Town looked good and dominated possession but it was the lack of a second goal that was always going to present its own problems.

In the second half, we caved in. Once Millwall had levelled, the writing was on the wall and once Jordan Spence inexplicably gave a corner away which lead to the second Millwall goal we all instinctively knew how this game was developing. Sadly this was the eighth time that Town have failed to see out a victory from a winning position, and this is why we are bottom of the table.

The fat lady is not only on stage now but about to sing and although mathematically we can still avoid the drop, in reality, we are already effectively down.

It was good to see second-half substitute Kaydon Jackson get on the score sheet with a sublime strike but it was too little too late. Town are down and it pains me to have to admit it.

What Marcus Evans does in the January transfer window matters little now and our only hope is that manager Paul Lambert still believes this club is worth fighting for? If he does, then we might just bounce back quickly.
