We all know what is needed. It is painstakingly obvious to us all but if manager Mick McCarthy doesn’t get a move on, we will find ourselves in a similar position to last season with not enough of a goal threat up top.
Goals win games and football is still essentially a simple game but the way our manager plays it, suggests that it is much more complicated than it really needs to be.
His obsession with defensive minded formations sucks the life blood out of the beautiful game and if he really wants to get bums back on seats again, then he must not let us begin the new season with just three recognised strikers – of which none are what you would call prolific!
As I outlined yesterday, the situation as it stands on the strikers front, is cause for real concern. The clock is ticking and yet there is still no mention of a new striker and instead McCarthy seems more focussed on his defence and today told Steven Taylor that there was no place for him at Town and he would not be offered a short term contract at the club.
‘We have brought in Jordan Spence and Dominic Iorfa in recent weeks to add to what we already have at the back and both Jordan and Dominic are very versatile players that can cover full-back and centre-back positions and we have good competition for places at the back now so we won`t be doing anything with Taylor,’ McCarthy explained to the club website.
All very well. I agree that the defence is looking decidedly stronger than last season – providing of course that our Polish keeper Bartosz Bialkowski is not going places?
The midfield too looks in better shape and it is pleasing to see Emyr Huws back in a blue shirt, after his excellent loan spell with us last term and I am quite sure Tom Adeyemi will add a bit of grit and goals to our midfield which is also encouraging.
It is only in the striking department that the fears still persist and for good reason. I know that strikers are hard to find and when you do find them, they usually cost a lot of dosh but we must address this problem sooner than later.
With less than three weeks to go before the season kicks off in earnest once more, we really should be working overtime to find a forward he will get us goals.
Just like last season, we let one of our regular scorers leave BEFORE we recruited his replacement. This is bad management and as it has occurred twice in two seasons, there is no other sensible way of looking at it I am afraid.
Perhaps behind the scenes things are developing but if they are, then the negotiations are being conducted without the press getting a sniff and this seems highly unlikely in my view.
