Fans favoured move for Pablo Ibanez over new arrival Ibrahima Sonko according to latest site poll

Ipswich Town boosted their defence last week with the signing of Ibrahima Sonko – but according to our latest site poll, he wasn’t the first choice of the fans.

Town’s diabolical defending against Southampton and Peterborough United was the clearest possible evidence that the Blues needed further reinforcements at the back to have any chance of success this season. That came as no surprise to manager Paul Jewell, who had already been on the lookout for new additions to his backline for some time, with a number of players linked in recent weeks.

Of these names, we gave you a shortlist of eight possible targets and asked you which one you felt Town should go for. Here’s how you voted:

45% – Pablo Ibanez (West Bromwich Albion)
16% – Ibrahima Sonko (Unattached)
9% – Victor Laguardia (Real Zaragoza)
9% – Richard Stearman (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
9% – Aljaz Struna (FC Koper)
6% – Ryan Shotton (Stoke City)
3% – Shane Duffy (Everton)
3% – Danny Collins (Stoke City)

West Bromwich Albion’s Pablo Ibanez was by far the favourite in this poll, claiming just under half the vote. The 30-year-old, who was in Spain’s 2006 World Cup squad, had been linked with a possible loan move before the Peterborough match, but there has been little talk about him since.

Also included in our shortlist was Sonko, who ultimately did join Town on a one year contract on Friday. The Senegalese international was second favourite behind Ibanez, but with only 16% of the vote, it is hardly a strong endorsement of Jewell’s latest acquisition.

Elsewhere, European-based players Aljaz Struna and Victor Laguardia both picked up 9% each as did Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Richard Stearman, who was seen by some to be a rather unrealistic target. Ryan Shotton, over whom Jewell is believed to be in talks with Stoke City, won 6% of the vote while another target at the Britannia Stadium, Danny Collins, joined Everton youngster Shane Duffy at the bottom with just 3% each.

The summer transfer window closes on Wednesday this week, and Jewell has not ruled out further signings before then. However, it looks increasingly likely that the Town boss will wait until the opening of the ’emergency’ loan window in the hope of landing some Premier League targets on short-term deals.
