So Where Will Town Finish This Season Then?

The month of February turned out to be much better than anyone could have expected and to go through the whole month undefeated was quite an achievement.

That said, too many draws means that we have fallen even further down the pecking order and now find ourselves in fifteenth place!

With the three points for a win system you could go undefeated throughout the whole season and still find yourself in trouble if you were to draw them all and with four draws out of five this last month, it has not helped our league position.

In fairness though, it was a very testing February and last weeks draw at Norwich was perhaps the pick of the bunch because it probably means the Canaries will not make the play-offs and we will face them again next season – when perhaps our squad is a little stronger?

Cole Skuse was back in the side last week and I can understand Mick McCarthy’s thinking. Away from home he is a valuable asset but I do believe that when we are playing at Portman Road, we must throw a little more caution to the wind.

As former captain Mick Mills alluded to on Radio Suffolk recently, if we are to make it fortress Portman Road again then we have to impose ourselves on the game from the start and not stutter and stammer before the opposition wakes up to the fact that we are not a serious threat going forward.

This calls for controlled aggression as we see from most sides playing on their own turf. We must go for the jugular from the off and not wait until we find ourselves a goal behind.

When McCarthy insists on playing Skuse and Douglas away from our place I can see the logic but at home most definitely not!

They lack any creative output and are in there only as holding midfielders – seriously stifling our attacking options.

On Saturday at Portman Road we take on Brentford and all our leading strikers are fit and raring to go.

This includes Tom Lawrence who is back from suspension so there is really no excuse for adopting a negative approach.

We need some entertainment and some goals and the only way we are going to get this is by attacking.

I hope McCarthy continues with his new 3-5-2 formation and resists the temptation to air on the side of caution because another bore draw will simply not do.
