Barnsley are closing in on midfielder Alan Quinn, according to today’s Daily Star, having agreed a £200,000 fee with Ipswich.

The former Sheffield Wednesday and United man is thought to be allowed to leave Portman Road this summer with his chances in the first-team likely to be limited should manager Roy Keane sign another midfielder.

Having been a part of the squad that traveled to Ireland for Ipswich’s pre-season tour, it suggests that no deal was in place because the Blues would have probably left him out so he didn’t get injured.

Just last week Barnsley were thought to be chasing Quinny for around £150,000, meaning Ipswich would make around a £250,000 loss on the player that they bought for £400k in January last year.

Elsewhere, released left back Dan Harding has become Alan Pardew’s first signing for League One Southampton. It was thought that he would go to Reading, where he spent the final couple of months of last season on loan but their offer of a contract was probably withdrawn with a change of management a the club.

Fellow released left-back or midfielder Matt Richards hasn’t done enough to win a contract at Leyton Orient, although another Town old boy James Scowcroft has signed for the Brisbane Road club.
