Ipswich Town have officially confirmed the signing of Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra for an undisclosed fee.

Chopra had been the subject of intense speculation in the past few days over a possible move to Portman Road, with rumours emerging earlier in the week that Town had offered Cardiff £1 million for the striker. Reports then claimed on Thursday that the Welsh club had accepted a bid of £1.5 million for the 27-year-old, with Chopra understood to have been at Portman Road for talks yesterday. The former England U21 international, who netted a total of 65 goals in 162 appearances in all competitions for the Bluebirds, has now formally put pen to paper on a three year deal, though the fee remains officially undisclosed.

Speaking to the Ipswich Town Official Website, Chopra revealed he was delighted to have completed his move. “I enjoyed my time at Cardiff but this is a new start for me at Ipswich and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I spoke to the manager and was impressed with his plans for the Club. I know some of the players here as well and from talking to them, it was clear there is real ambition at Ipswich.

“I can’t wait to get going and the target is to help the Club reach the Premier League.”

Chopra becomes Town’s first signing of what promises to be a busy summer for Paul Jewell, who is looking to build a squad capable of targeting promotion in his first full season in charge. The acquisition of a proven Championship goalscorer has been a must for Ipswich for a number of years, and the arrival of Chopra surely represents a significant statement of intent from the Blues boss.

“Michael is a top quality striker with a proven track record when it comes to scoring goals,” Jewell told the Club’s Official Website. “He is just the type of player we are looking for to help take this Club forward.”

The arrival of Chopra could be swiftly followed by further new signings, with Ivar Ingimarsson also reported to have held discussions with Town since his release by Reading. However, speculation is also likely to grow that Chopra’s signing will pave the way for Connor Wickham to leave the club, with Liverpool and Sunderland both reported to have lined up bids for the 18-year-old.

How do you feel about the signing of Michael Chopra? Is he finally the answer to our goalscoring problems? Do you think this will mean the end of Wickham’s time at Portman Road, or are you hoping for a Connor-Chopra strike pairing at Town next season?
