Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained

Trialist can be hit and miss, some pay off whereas the vast majority don’t come to anything at all but there isn’t really much of a risk involved is there?

Mick McCarthy takes a very much ‘nothing ventured nothing gained’ view when it comes to trialists, sharing those exact thoughts with the EADT this week.

Leroy Lita turned out for Town in the one-win over Braintree Town on Tuesday night, scoring the winning goal. That was as good as it got though with McCarthy admitting that he had left the club.

He wasn’t giving much away with the likes of Balint Bajner, Achille Campion, Kevin Bru or anyone else though saying: ‘You can tell if they’re for you or not almost straight away.

‘Triallists are triallists – they come in, some get kept on, some get sent home and some get asked to stay a little bit longer.’

One that has now been confirmed as training with us again is our former midfielder Owen Garvan, but at this stage the boss was keen to stress that he was ONLY training with us at this stage.

McCarthy felt it worthwhile taking a look at him again seen as he isn’t in the Crystal Palace plans and didn’t head off to America with Tony Pulis’ squad. He branded him ‘a great lad’ and praised his efforts in training but ‘nothing’s happening at the moment.’
