Ipswich Town are reported to be close to completing their first signing of the summer, with Sunderland defender Nyron Nosworthy the subject of considerable speculation over the weekend.

Town manager Paul Jewell was known to have held talks with a prospective signing two weeks ago who could well be the potential new arrival, but their identity remains a mystery. The news coincides with widespread reports over the weekend that Ipswich are among a number of clubs to have held talks with defender Nosworthy, who was linked with the Blues earlier in May. The 30-year-old, who has spent most of the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, is also said to have been in discussions with Championship rivals Crystal Palace and Reading, but Town are claimed to be leading the chase.

Though Nosworthy is perhaps the most likely candidate, there are several other players who could be the mystery target. Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, who was linked with Town a month ago, was also mentioned in reports this weekend but looks more likely to join Middlesbrough, whilst rumours about Belgian international Faris Haroun were growing towards the end of last week. Michael Chopra has also been the subject of ongoing speculation about a much-discussed move to Town, though there is currently little to suggest that the Cardiff City striker would be the player in question.
