I was delighted with the signing of Joe Pigott yesterday on a three-year deal. Of the seven newcomers who have arrived so far, he is undoubtedly the one that has excited me the most.

That is not being disrespectful to Lee Evans, Rekeem Harper, Macauley Bonne, Vaclav Hladky, Matt Penney and Wes Burns, but I firmly believe that our new centre-forward is a perfect fit.

The good news is that more signings are apparently on their way. Manager Paul Cook told the club website that a lot of these deals are almost over the line. “We’ve had to be very patient over signings, and supporters, I’m sure, have been getting a bit agitated at times, but you can only be pleased with the calibre of player that we are bringing in. One of the consistent messages from us as a football club is, watch this space. When you’re telling people to be patient and watch this space, you have to trust the people involved. Hopefully, with some more additions to come, the supporters can look ahead to the season with great optimism!”

I’ll be honest with you – even frank! I have never felt so excited about a new football season for a very long time, and although we cannot expect overnight success, we have already the makings of a very good side in my view.  Former loan player Bersant Celina, and  Millers Midfielder Matt Crooks are still on Town’s radar, and another more persuasive bid for Crooks is imminent.

Under the Marcus Evans regime, we have become used to nothing much happening in the pre-season transfer window, but what a difference a new manager and a new set of owners make! As fans, of course, we are impatient for change and under Cook’s leadership, we have got exactly what we had wished for! I cannot remember another season when we have sent so many packing and replaced them with a group of players who have all bought into the concept of 100% commitment to the cause. Yes, talk is cheap but it really does seem as if their actions will back up the small talk.

And let’s not forget that both Oxford United and Ipswich Town are chasing Dundee United’s 23-year-old left-back Jamie Robson so he could prove to be a valuable back-up – as could Hayden Coulson, if either of these deals were to materialise. All I do know is that whatever happens next, I cannot wait until the new season begins! For the first time in a long time, we can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Totally agree Frank, the most exciting pre season for a long time. Even though we have already signed some very good players, I do feel the next 4-5 will be the most significant ones but of course the hardest ones to get over the line.

    All the best.

Thanks, Simon. Yes, we need more recruits and as correctly pointed out, the last few always present the biggest challenges, but on two fronts at least, we are seemingly very colse.
