Manager Mick McCarthy has said he’s hoping for a quiet weekend and a quiet transfer deadline day as he looks to keep the side together for the season ahead.

Speaking to the Official Site the gaffer was pretty adamant that he’d be a very happy man if his phone didn’t ring between now and the close of the transfer window.

Premier League clubs have until 11pm on Monday September 1 to get the relevant paperwork through for deals, and then the next opportunity is the month of January, and whilst McCarthy hasn’t ruled out any new arrivals – although they will most likely be via the loan market now – his main concern are any late bids for players he wants to keep with us.

‘The loan option looks the more likely for us in terms of bringing in players. I have said before, the Premier League teams have kept their squads together because their players who have played in the World Cup have been having a rest. Once their squads have settled down though, there may be scope to get some players in.’

McCarthy goes on to reiterate his main issue is in keeping the players we have though as deadline day looms and that will be his focus until the deadline passes.

‘My biggest concern is keeping what we have here. If I can do that then I will be happy and of course, if clubs do come in, it will be for what people perceive to be our best ones. Let’s hope nothing happens.’

The gaffer ends the interview by joking that to be sure it doesn’t happen he might just not answer his phone over the next few days.
