Reports in a couple of ill-informed national papers, copied by the local media are wide of the mark if Town’s chief executive Simon Clegg is to be believed.

Although McCarthy is on the shortlist and has been interviewd by Marcus Evans as first revealed by Vital Football, he is by no means a certainty for the job.

Clegg told the ITFC website: ‘We received a number of applications for the manager`s position from many well respected names in football.

“Having sifted through the applicants, we have now drawn up our shortlist and interviews are underway.”

Ian Holloway and Alan Curbishley are among the bookies’ favourites but we understand Steve Kean, Aidy Boothroyd and Owen Coyle are also on the list.
