We have waited a while but it could be argued that it was worth the wait. Today Ipswich Town completed the signing of Martyn Waghorn for a fee said to be in the region of one million pounds.

This is the second striker signing from Glasgow Rangers in the last few weeks and I think most of us are agreed it is a good one.

Waghorn takes the number nine shirt but manager Mick McCarthy has already warned him that he will have to fight for his place because he now has four forwards vying for two positions.

McCarthy explained, ‘I`ve always admired Waggy, so when I was told he might be available and that we could afford him it was an absolute no-brainer. First and foremost he is one of us. He wants to graft and put a shift in. He`s a trier and that`s a good starting point. He`s got good ability – he can play either side but he`s got the number nine and will be a centre-forward. That doesn`t mean he`s guaranteed to play. He`s got a hell of a task getting in the team.’

It looks though as if he may make his debut tomorrow against Luton Town and it could be a baptism of fire, as the Bedfordshire club destroyed Yeovil at Kenilworth Road at the weekend, winning their first competitive game of the season 8-2! If you watch the goals on Youtube, you will see what we are up against tomorrow evening!

But let us stick with the good news and both new forwards I feel could gel well together – although at Rangers this occurred on only four occasions apparently.

I remain very hopeful that given the squad Mick McCarthy has at his disposal this term, we can embarrass all those so-called football experts who think that Town will go down.

The win at Portman Road on Saturday was the dream start we all hoped for and with a couple more additions, this squad will look very competitive in all departments which has to be reassuring.

At 27, Waghorn is at the ideal age to be nearing the very peak of his abilities and last season he was Rangers top goal scorer with 16 goals and scored for the Glaswegians a rather impressive 44 goals from just 63 starts and fifteen appearances off the bench.

If international clearance comes through in time, there is every chance of seeing him tomorrow and given The Hatters current form, perhaps it is just as well!
