Managerial Update

WITH the club’s job of finding a new manager is well underway, the latest developments are as follows…

Earlier in the week, club chairman David Sheepshanks and chief executive Derek Bowden started sifting through the 40 plus applications for the vacant managerial post at Portman Road.

As the interview process began, former Town defender Tony Mowbray, now manager at Hibs, was amongst those iniatially interviewed.

North of the border, the Scottish side refused to comment on Mowbray’s position at the club.

A statement from the Edinburgh club read; ‘We do not comment on speculation.’

Meanwhile, the early favourite for the post, Preston boss Billy Davies, was granted permission to speak to Charlton, as Town looked to be out of the running, regarding a Davies move to Portman Road.

Tony Mowbray later declared he was ruling himself out of the job, which was confirmed by an official Hibs statement.

David Sheepshanks then revealed Mowbray’s choices for leaving.

‘He (Mowbray) feels he is not ready to return to Portman Road so soon and we must respect his decision.’

Yesterday it was also revealed that Colchester United’s Phil Parkinson was refused permission for an approach by Ipswich.

Parkinson was understood to be one of the prefered successors to Joe Royle.

This leaves the managerial race still wide open, as the expected successors have seemingly ruled themselves out for the time being.

The club would still prefer a new boss in place in time for pre season training in late June.
