Making Ipswich Great Again

After so many years of stagnation and neglect, Ipswich Town have a new spring in their step, thanks to Americans Brett Johnson, Berke Bakay and Mark Detmer investment in the Blues. Whilst former owner Marcus Evans will still retain a 5% stake in the club.

Town supporters everywhere went straight to their laptops and home computers this morning to re-check the facts and convince themselves they had not been dreaming! These last few weeks have been mind-blowing. Firstly, Paul Lambert left with his tail between his legs, claiming that the club was ” rotten to the core,” and then in stepped Paul Cook – only to find that the squad he had inherited was not fit for purpose.

Yesterday, everything changed. “We are committed to restoring Ipswich to its former glory. To this end, the first priority is promotion to the Championship and the management team will be given additional funds to strengthen the playing squad, ” explained Brett Johnson on the official Ipswich website. This is music to the ears of most Town fans and for younger supporters who have only witnessed one disappointment after another, this news must be heavenly!

Making Ipswich great again is no an easy task and the new incumbents know it only too well. Mike O’Leary, who is part of the Gamechanger group, and is the new chairman of Ipswich Town said candidly when quizzed by Graeme Mac from Radio Suffolk about Premier aspirations that it will be along a hard road ahead.

“No leagues are easy. It doesn’t matter which league you’re in, there are opponents in there who are tough to beat. The league we’re in right now we have 23 opponents, and we have to strive to be better than they are at everything we do. Everything we do!  And that includes player training. It includes performance. It includes fitness. It includes the tactical position the manager chooses to play. All of those we need to be the best.”

This is a fresh start for Ipswich town football club and, as former Chairman David Sheepshanks reminded us again today, this is a team game. Supporters, back-room staff, players and the management team all need to be rowing in the same direction. If we all pull together with the positivity that this news has brought us,  then there is every hope that we really could be heading in the right direction, after so many depressing years of sad neglect.

Yes, this is a fresh start for the club and now we have a good manager and good American backers to make our dreams come true. Evans was a joke, and I am pleased to finally see the back of him!

  • Frank Weston says:

Indeed James. The times they are a changing.
