Liverpool are widely reported to have made an offer of £8 million for Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham.

Despite having signed a new three year contract in April, Wickham will inevitably be the subject of much transfer speculation this summer. The 18-year-old, who netted 9 times for Town this season despite a lengthy spell on the sidelines in the first half of the campaign, is hotly tipped for a future at the top level.

Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have all been linked with Wickham in the past year or so, but the reports suggest that Liverpool are now leading the chase, with Kenny Dalglish offering £8 million for the teenager along with a £15 million bid for Wigan Athletic’s Charles N’Zogbia. The Merseyside club were previously linked with a move for Wickham in December during Roy Hodgson’s tenure, but Dalglish is known to be keen on investing in young English talent having already spent £35 million on striker Andy Carroll in January. The manager is said to have watched Wickham on a number of occasions along with director of football Damien Comolli, who was seen at Portman Road for Town’s 1-1 draw against Hull City in February.

Whether £8 million would be sufficient to persuade Ipswich manager Paul Jewell to grant Liverpool talks with Wickham is highly debatable, with the asking price expected to be at least £10 million. However, despite the club having repeatedly suggested that the youngster will not be sold, the Blues boss could be tempted to cash in so that he can make major improvements elsewhere in his squad; something which many Town supporters would actually be in favour of, according to a recent Vital Ipswich poll. Even so, any deal is likely to be held up for some time with Wickham currently away with the England U21s for their European Championship campaign in Denmark this month.

What do you make of these latest reports about Wickham? Do you think £8 million would be a fair price, or is he worth more? On the other hand, do you think Town should reject all offers?
