Former Ipswich manager Roy Keane has revealed how a legal letter from Manchester United was the reason why he snubbed Sir Alex Ferguson’s tribute dinner.

In an interview with the Sunday Times Keane explained how being subjected to legal action by the club he won numerous medals with soured his relationship with his former boss.

The former Manchester United captain was invited to Sir Alex’s tribute dinner to mark him being 25 years in chareg at Od Trafford but decided not to go.

He said:”The way it [his exit from United] ended, the legal letter, I couldn`t have gone and sat there like everything was great. He [Ferguson] would come and we all stand up and clap, I couldn`t have done that,” Keane said.

The ST revealed the legal letter came after an interview Keane did with The Irish Times, published on April 5, 2008, in which he was critical of United`s handling of his exit from the club in November 2005. Through the legal firm Brabners, Chaffe, Street, United demanded that Keane issue a full apology and give a written undertaking the criticisms would not be repeated.

Keane, who went to play for Celtic before going into management with Sunderland and Ipswich, ignored the legal threat, which eventually faded.

But Ferguson and Keane have subsequently clashed over comments his former captain has made about United, especially their abject Champions’ League camapign.
