Departing midfielder Gavin Williams has sent a thank-you to the Town fans and staff after joining Bristol City on a two-year-deal earlier today.

Williams has been given a fresh start after seemingly spending more time in the treatment room than the pitch at Portman Road since joining from West Ham two-and-a-half years ago in Joe Royle’s tenure.

‘I had some good times at the club and there are some great lads there in the dressing room. I’m looking forward to my time at Bristol but I want to wish every success to Ipswich.

‘It’s a good move for me, though, going to Bristol. It takes me closer to my family in Wales and that is very important to me and it also gives me a chance to work with Gary Johnson again, who I know well.

‘I want to say thanks to Jim, Bryan Klug and the rest of the staff for their help in my time at Ipswich and wish them all the best for the future. The supporters were good to me as well and I’d like to thank them for their backing.’

Meanwhile, his new manager Gary Johnson was understandably pleased with his new signing, especially for the nominal fee that they are reported to have paid.

‘The opportunity was too good to miss. I believe Gavin will improve our squad. I know him very well and actually I never thought he would become available at the fee we’ve paid,’ said the Robins boss.

‘I think our supporters will see why I’ve brought him here pretty soon.’
