Is Town Another Work In Progress?

It was I believe, John Locke who once said that, “All men are prone to error, and most men are, in many points, by passion or interest, under temptation to it.”

Jim Magilton used to use it a lot. Roy Keane would say it, if he felt that the “trust me,” had been battered to death and of course it was a favourite term of Paul Jewell too, it must be noted. The new version of “a work in progress” is used more sparingly by Mick McCarthy but having heard this said by so many over the last ten years, the question remains, what sort of progress are we making?
Under Mick McCarthy we know that we will never play sexy football because the beautiful game was not conceived in Yorkshire. His rugged no nonsense approach to football is to grind out results and not to fashion out something that is briefly in vogue. Let us be honest about this and let’s face it he is a very honest man, Mick McCarthy may eventually take us to the Promised Land but it will be on his terms and on his terms only. Progress in this sense means backs to the wall mental strength and grit and determination.

Is this what you want? Would you happily trade playing pretty football for grinding out results? In other words, gaining promotion at the expense of entertainment? Or is the modern day perception of football entertainment, to win at all costs? If it is, then Mick is your man!

Having followed the Town since I was knee high to a grasshopper, I have been perhaps spoilt on the good times. The Sir Bobby Robson era the most notable of course but let us not forget what George Burley did in the feel good category! He got us out of this league and he did it with style and on a limited budget I seem to recall. Mick McCarthy is a likable fellow. He is forthright and focused and never uses the lack of finances as a reason for failure. In many ways he is a chairman`s dream and perhaps that is why he and Marcus are such good bedfellows?

I want to hear from YOU! The true blue Ipswich Town supporter and find out which side of the thin blue line you stand on? Is the winning habit more important than the quality of the football on display and does winning mean winning at all costs? Tell me what you think?
