At one stage this season we had eleven players all out injured and yet ironically, we could not stop winning!
The wonderful start we made with four wins in a row, helped to cement our position in the table so that when we started to lose games, we still had enough points in the bank to keep us in touch with the play-off pack.
As things stand we are eighth in the table but with a game in hand and this is perhaps just as well, as October promises to be a very testing period for the Tractor Boys, with some tricky games ahead.
October has been a notoriously bad month for the Blues over the years so the more players that Mick McCarthy has at his disposal the better for all concerned.
As he explained in his press conference to a confused looking Brenner Woolley of Radio Suffolk ‘ It is better looking at em than for em.’
Tommy Smith, Flynn Downes, Tommy Smith and David McGoldrick have all trained and are fit to play – as of course is our jewel in the crown at the back, centre half Adam Webster.
The only bit of disappointing news relates to Tom Adeyemi, who tweaked his hamstring in the warm-up against Bristol City and had to be replaced before kick-off. He is still struggling apparently.
Emyr Huws is not over his achilles problem either, which has meant that he has not kicked a ball in earnest all season and remains some way off the first team picture at the moment.
Travelling to third placed Sheffield United and coming away with something won’t be easy – although McCarthy said he always enjoyed playing there both as a player and as a manager but that did not mean to suggest that he was always left the place in a happy mood!
It is good news to discover that David McGoldrick is over his tight hamstring and with the Republic of Ireland qualifying for the World Cup play-offs, he will be more determined than ever to continue his current fine form, with Irish scouts monitoring his progress all the time.
After Sheffield United, Town come face to face with our arch rivals from across the border eight days later.
But it is as battle that takes place at Portman Road and with our new strike force in action, the hope is that we finally muster a well earned win!
