Ipswich Town have officially announced the signing of midfielder Lee Bowyer on a free transfer following his release by Birmingham City.

Bowyer had been widely expected to sign for Ipswich this week after widespread reports last week linking him with a move to Portman Road. Bowyer’s representatives were understood to have held talks before the weekend with the player himself away on holiday, but the 34-year-old has now put pen to paper on a one year contract.

‘There was interest from other clubs but Ipswich is the right choice for me,’ Bowyer told the Official Club Website. ‘Everything I heard from the manager was very positive. He wants to get Ipswich back in the Premier League and I’m looking forward to playing my part in trying to make that happen.’

Reaction is likely to be somewhat divided about the signing of Bowyer, with the former Leeds, West Ham and Newcastle midfielder having been no stranger to controversy over the years. However, having netted 99 goals in almost 600 appearances including Premier League and European football, the one-time England international undoubtedly offers a wealth of experience to Paul Jewell’s midfield.

Bowyer becomes Town’s fifth signing of the summer and arrives in time to link up with the Ipswich squad as they jet off on their pre-season tour of Holland ahead of their first match against FC Eindhoven on Tuesday afternoon. There may yet be more transfer news to come before then however, with widespread rumours that the Blues have been closing in on another target for some time.
