Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has revealed that he has been chasing a Premier League striker on loan, with reports linking West Bromwich Albion’s Simon Cox and Aston Villa’s Nathan Delfouneso.

Cox netted 9 times for West Brom as the Baggies won promotion from the Championship last season, but he has since struggled to hold down a first team place in the Premier League. Jewell is said to have had a loan offer rebuffed for the 23-year-old striker, who previously scored 43 league goals in two seasons at Swindon Town.

Having reportedly missed out on Cox, Ipswich are now said to have turned their attentions to Aston Villa frontman Delfouneso. The 20-year-old first emerged from the Villa youth academy in 2008 but has only made 22 Premier League appearances, scoring twice. Since the arrival of former Town striker Darren Bent at Villa Park in January, Delfouneso has fallen down the strikers pecking order under Gerard Houllier and could well be seeking a temporary move away.

Town suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth on Saturday despite a string of chances, and Jewell is keen to find that cutting edge. The Blues boss revealed that he has been targeting top-flight players on loan, but so far he has been unsuccessful in encouraging players to drop down a division.

‘We are always looking to improve the squad and we did try and get in a couple of players last week,’ Jewell told the Town Official Website. ‘They were at Premier League clubs but said they didn’t want a loan move and wanted to stay and fight for their place and I can understand that.’

It is unknown whether Cox and Delfouneso are indeed the players that Jewell has targeted, though both could be a suitable short term option at Portman Road with Town struggling for goals in recent weeks despite a 6-0 victory at Doncaster in February. However, any such move is only likely to be a temporary measure, with Jewell thought to be making plans for permanent deals in the summer.
