Doncaster Rovers have released an official statement revealing that they have rejected a double bid from Ipswich Town for Billy Sharp and James Coppinger.

Striker Sharp and midfielder Coppinger have both been linked with Town on several occasions in recent weeks. Coppinger was voted Player Of The Year by his Doncaster team-mates and fans for his performances this season, whilst Ipswich manager Paul Jewell is known to be chasing a prolific striker with Rovers’ top scorer Sharp appearing to fit the bill.

The statement, issued on the Doncaster Rovers Official Website, reveals that the South Yorkshire club have turned down bids from Ipswich of £2.3 million for Sharp and £300,000 for Coppinger. “Sean O’Driscoll is determined to build a quality squad to go into next season and these two players are pivotal to that desire,” said Rovers chairman John Ryan. “The club remains ambitious and feels that with a bit more luck with injuries and refereeing decisions we can be a real force in the Championship next season.”

The news comes as the first transfer story of substance at Ipswich Town this summer, with boss Jewell having previously revealed his intentions to start building his squad for next season as quickly as possible. Numerous other players have been linked whilst discussions are ongoing regarding the future of on-loan Hull City midfielder Jimmy Bullard. The 32-year-old, who netted 5 goals in 16 matches for the Blues, has suggested that he would be prepared to take a pay cut to remain at Portman Road next season.

  • Perhaps it says much about how dozy we usually are in the transfer market, but I found this story quite surprising – Ipswich bidding for good players, in MAY? What is the world coming to…(!) Would be quite happy with Sharp but I don’t want to see us blow too much cash on him, given that we have many other positions to fill.
