Results of our fans’ poll on Ipswich Town’s best and worst performances of the 2010/11 season.
The Vital Ipswich countdown of the top ten moments from Ipswich Town’s 2010/11 season has been revealed – but what did you think of the campaign?
We recently gave our review of the most memorable moments of this season in our two-part feature ‘Ipswich: The Best And Worst of 2010/11‘. It has certainly been a rollercoaster ride for the Blues, ranging from the highs of beating Arsenal and hitting Doncaster Rovers for six to the lows of a derby double for Norwich City and the FA Cup hammering at Chelsea. For the past week therefore, we’ve been asking for your views on which were Town’s best and worst performances of the campaign, with four possible choices for each ‘award’. Here’s what you had to say – starting with those matches we’d like to forget…
Ipswich Town – Worst Performance of 2010/11
7% – Chelsea 7-0 Ipswich (09 Jan 2011)
80% – Ipswich 1-5 Norwich (21 Apr 2011)
0% – Norwich 4-1 Ipswich (28 Nov 2010)
0% – Swansea 4-1 Ipswich (25 Apr 2011)
13% – Other
The matches selected were Town’s four heaviest defeats of the campaign, but it seems losing margin was not the biggest issue in determining which was the worst for the fans. Despite being thrashed 7-0 by Chelsea, it is the 5-1 thumping at the hands of the old enemy in April that really got you rattled this season. It’s not much of a surprise that Ipswich 1-5 Norwich was by far the top choice as the Blues’ worst performance of the year, claiming a whopping 80% of the vote.
Even though the Blues were also tonked 4-1 away to the Canaries in November, to lose by a bigger margin at home to our fiercest rivals was the greater humiliation, with no votes for the match at Carrow Road. Only 7% voted for the Stamford Bridge debacle and none for the 4-1 defeat to Swansea, which came just four days after that derby disaster at Portman Road. Meanwhile 13% felt our worst performance of the campaign was actually something other than the games listed in our poll; why not let us know which match you had in mind by leaving your comments using the form below!
Ipswich Town – Best Performance of 2010/11
10% – Doncaster 0-6 Ipswich (15 Feb 2011)
0% – Ipswich 3-0 Sheff Utd (05 Feb 2011)
10% – Ipswich 3-0 Leicester (18 Dec 2010)
80% – Ipswich 1-0 Arsenal (12 Jan 2011)
0% – Other
What else could it possibly have been? In a season that has had more than its fair share of misery, that night when Tamas Priskin struck against the Gunners was surely something to treasure. So much so, in fact, that an identically whopping 80% voted for Ipswich’s 1-0 Carling Cup Semi-Final First Leg victory over Arsenal as Town’s best performance of the season – perhaps because of the illustrious opposition, perhaps because of the occasion, or perhaps simply because we had actually played our socks off for a change!
That victory was surely the biggest in profile but not the biggest in margin, with the record-equalling 6-0 away win at Doncaster taking that title. Only 10% were impressed enough to call it our best of the campaign though, either because Donny were simply dreadful that night or because the Arsenal game was just better! The 3-0 home win over Leicester – AKA the ‘Miracle on Ice’ – also claimed 10% of the vote, though there were no votes for the identical scoreline against Sheffield United in February despite Connor Wickham’s unforgettable solo goal.
Perhaps it says much for the way Ipswich fell short of expectations this year that we were arguably more spoilt for choice for bad matches than we were with good ones! Certainly the negative scorelines were far bigger, but at least that special night against Arsenal gave every Town fan a moment when they could really cheer. Let’s keep our fingers crossed then that there are more moments like that next season – and, for that matter, less of the opposite!
