Ipswich Town midfielder Grant Leadbitter has been discharged from hospital after receiving scans for the head injury he suffered against Bristol City on Saturday.
Leadbitter was carried off on a stretcher after colliding with City defender Damion Stewart during the second half of Town’s 1-0 win at Ashton Gate. The Town midfielder, who scored twice to help the Blues earn a point at Middlesbrough on Tuesday, had been momentarily knocked unconscious following the collision and was given oxygen on the pitch before being taken to hospital for scans.
‘The results of those scans are satisfactory and he has been discharged and allowed to travel back home,’ club physio Matt Byard told the Ipswich Town Official Website. ‘We will review his condition again on Sunday and take it from there.’
Leadbitter’s injury proved to be the second setback of the afternoon for Town on Saturday having previously lost midfielder Lee Martin following his first half sending off for a foul on Kalifa Cisse. Ipswich manager Paul Jewell refused to criticise referee Russell Booth over the decision, but the Blues boss has expressed his support for the player.
‘I didn’t get a great view of Lee’s challenge, but tackling is not his strong point and if it was mistimed I know it wouldn’t have been malicious,’ Jewell told Sky Sports. ‘I thought the ref had a good game and we will take whatever punishment is meted out.’
Depending on the verdict regarding Leadbitter’s injury, both he and Martin could now be set to miss part of Town’s run-in, with the latter having only recently returned from a two-game suspension after previously picking up 10 bookings over the course of the campaign.
