Ipswich’s FA Youth Cup fifth round match with Watford was abandoned with two minutes remaining on the clock, with the score at the time 0-0.

Torrential rain prior to the game had already put the match in doubt, but referee Matt McLaughlin was happy for last night’s tie to go ahead after holding two pitch inspections.

The pitch covers had become so saturated with water before kick-off that the ground staff were unable to move them on their own, meaning that stewards had to lend a hand.

After 88 minutes, with both sides unable to find any real rhythm due to the state of the Portman Road pitch, the ref called a halt to proceedings, meaning that the match will almost certainly be replayed at Ipswich.

With the first-team having a game on Saturday against Blackpool, we may be seeing the Portman Road pitch looking rather worse than we have seen it for some years.
