Everton have joined Aston Villa in coveting Ipswich defender Aaron Cresswell, Vital Football has learned.

While Villa’s interest in Cresswell is not new, they were reportedly keen to sign the 23-year-old last january, Everton’s interest will cause some consternation among Town fans.

Cresswell, who signed from the Toffees’ Liverpool neighbours, Tranmere Rovers for an initial £240,000, rising to more than £500,000 with various add ons, would welcome a return to Merseyside, especially as his partner, daughter of former Town and Everton defender David Unsworth is from that neck of the woods.

Former Everton manager David Moyes identified Cresswell, who played every game for Ipswich last season and has been a consistent performer at left back, as a possible back up for leighton Baines, and if Baines follows Moyes to Manchester United, whoever the new manager his will have a thick file from scouts ready for him.

Ipswich will look to get around £4million for the defender, with 20% of the profit going to Rovers.
