As you know, Ipswich Town has a new shirt sponsor next year, and it comes with a name that we will never forget! He has already sold more than 150 million records worldwide, and Ed Sheeran has now agreed on a one-year deal to be the main sponsor for both the men’s and women’s teams at the club.

I use superlatives sparingly because there is so much superlative abuse around these days that I try to guard against the exaggerated or hyperbolical expression of praise. That said, this really is fabulous news for Town fans and everyone associated with the Blues. ” Yeah I was born a misfit, grew up in a town 10 miles from Ipswich,” are the opening words to his 2019 song that shares the header today. Sheeran linked up with Eminem and 50 Cent on this hip-hop track, and it shows exactly where he is at. He is a man on a mission, and so too, hopefully, are Ipswich Town!

He has never lost sight of his roots, and like Ipswich Town, over the last few years, has had to battle against adversity. Ed had a bit of a stutter when he was young and overcame it wonderfully well. Ipswich Town have been stuttering through life for some years as a football club, so you could say these two are made for each other! They say that fire is the test of gold and adversity the test of strong men. This applies as much to Ipswich as it does to Ed. We must stand up and be counted!

An old school chum of his nicknamed ‘the professor’ said some months ago that Sheeran was actively looking at ways of helping the club he has followed since he was a kid, and this seems like a marriage made in heaven! Sheeran explained his thinking. “The football club is a big part of the local community and this is my way of showing my support. I have always enjoyed my trips to Portman Road, and I’m looking forward to going back there as soon as supporters are allowed into stadiums again. With the new owners from the US coming in, there are sure to be exciting times ahead for Ipswich fans – including myself!”

Manager Paul Cook was also upbeat about the prospects of this new partnership and said on the official website that this move bodes well for the future of Ipswich Town football club. “It’s well-documented what a strong supporter of the Club he is and I think it’s fantastic for everyone involved. He’s a sponsor but he’s also an ally because of his loyalty. Hopefully, this is the start of a very positive summer for Ipswich Town.”

Sheeran, whose personal fortune is estimated to be around £200 million has suffered financially since Covid arrived on the scene, as have all musicians due to a lack of live concert revenue. That is why is it even more gratifying to see this very talented young musician put his money where his mouth is, and back the Blues for the season ahead. We love yeah, Ed!
