I Did Not See This One Coming

|

Now, I had not seen this one coming. Scott Fraser from Dundee joined us from MK Dons today. (As far as I am aware, he is not related to Ryan Fraser but if he is half as good I will be happy!)

The midfielder, who scored an impressive 14 times in 41 league starts last season, and who was named Dons players’ player of the season, became the Blues’ eighth arrival of the summer when he signed on a three-year deal at Portman Road earlier today. Like Ryan, he likes to attack, and although he is essentially a midfielder, he is often in amongst the goals!

It is only in the last hour that the official website has confirmed his signing, but even this afternoon, the EADT and the TWTD websites were suggesting that a deal was close. And so it was to prove so what do we know about him? He is an attacking midfielder who likes to score goals and is at 26, the perfect age to develop his career further.

Players between the ages of 23 to 28 are probably the best sort to acquire. They are not too young to have their heads easily turned, and they are at a point in their careers when they know that it probably is now or never, if they still harness the ambition to rise to the top in the domestic game. Like all the other new arrivals at the club, Fraser sees this as the perfect place to be part of a winning team with a winning mentality.

He said after he signed that he sees a bright future for himself and his new teammates at Ipswich Town. He told the official website his intentions. “My goal now is to be part of a successful team here – one that is battling at the top end right the way through the season.”

Fraser began his career with hometown club Dundee United, and as his Christian name suggests, he is from that neck of the woods. He then had a loan spell with Airdrie before moving south of the border to Burton Albion in 2018, where he made 72 appearances and scored 11 goals. Then he moved to MK Dons in 2020 and was their Player of the Season last term. As usual, the fee is undisclosed but it is estimated to be around 750,000 after Town’s first bid was rejected.

He regards himself to be an attack-minded player, and certainly, his goals per games ratio seem to confirm this. As I have indicated, he is the right age to progress quite rapidly here.

And why join Ipswich? Let him explain. “I have seen the players the club have signed recently, and it’s a massive club that clearly wants to go places so I’m delighted to be part of it. I have always said that I have wanted to play in the Championship and then push on from there, but I didn’t want to go to a club a level up, just to say I had played at that standard. If the opportunity came along, I wanted to join a club that had ambitions to get in the Championship, and not just survive, but to kick on from there, and when I spoke to Mark and the gaffer here, that is what I took from it.”

Like all the other newcomers, he seems to have his head screwed on and genuinely wants to succeed. That’s good news for him, and for everyone else associated with Ipswich Town football club.
